The body of a second man was recovered from the Yamuna, officials said on Tuesday, a day after four friends were feared to have drowned while swimming near Zero Pusta Road in east Delhi’s Geeta Colony.

Rajan (32) was pulled out of the river at around 9.40 am on Tuesday, taking the death toll in the incident to two. The search for the remaining two men, Hemant (27) and Sachin (35), was later suspended due to adverse weather conditions, officials said.

According to family members, the four friends had met in the Gandhi Nagar area before heading to the Yamuna for a swim on Monday evening. Shortly after entering the river near Madina Masjid on Zero Pusta Road, they were allegedly swept away by the strong current.

The Delhi Fire Services (DFS) received a distress call around 7.20 pm on Monday and rushed two fire tenders from the Geeta Colony and Laxmi Nagar fire stations to the spot. Firefighters, police personnel and local divers launched a search operation.

During the initial rescue operation on Monday, Sonu (35) was pulled out of the river around 8.10 pm with the help of local divers. “He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead,” an official from the Fire department said. The search continued until about 10 pm before being called off because of darkness.

Rescue teams resumed the operation early on Tuesday, leading to the recovery of Rajan’s body. However, the operation was later halted as rain and poor weather conditions hampered rescue efforts, according to officials.

The fire official said the department received information that four men had drowned near Zero Pusta and immediately dispatched rescue teams from the Geeta Colony and Laxmi Nagar fire stations.
